Alternation allowance

The alternation allowance is a benefit that you can receive during alternation leave. Alternation allowances are paid by unemployment funds and the Social Insurance Institution (SII).

Alternation leave is an arrangement based on an alternation leave agreement between an employee and their employer. The employer hires an unemployed job-seeker who has signed up with the TE Office to cover for the employee while they are on alternation leave.

Members of Aaria Unemployment Fund can apply for an alternation allowance for the duration of their alternation leave through us. Please familiarise yourself with the eligibility criteria and instructions for applicants before you apply.

The alternation leave system will be abolished on August 1, 2024. The change will not affect ongoing job alternation leaves. Job alternation leave can be taken under current conditions if the leave begins no later than July 31, 2024. Individuals who have commenced their leave before this date will have the right to take job alternation leave for a maximum of 180 calendar days.
